The Wedding of the Year: Muriel’s Wedding The Musical Takes the Vows with INFiLED

Overview
What does the perfect wedding look like? For Muriel, a young woman stuck in the dull suburb of Porpoise Spit, it’s all about the white dress, the church, and the spotlight. This quirky dream unfolds on stage in Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, the stage adaptation of the beloved 1994 Australian film by P.J. Hogan, produced by Global Creatures and Leicester Curve.
Played from 10 April 2025 to 10 May at the Curve Theatre in Leicester, England, the show brings bold visuals, humor, and heart to life, backed by a vibrant and dynamic setup powered by 412 LED panels from INFiLED’s DBmk2 Series.
We spoke with video engineer Dan Trenchard to learn how the tech behind the scenes plays a starring role.
Bringing Muriel’s World to the Stage
Based on Hogan’s original screenplay, Muriel’s Wedding The Musical builds on the film’s legacy with a dazzling, immersive experience. Audiences don’t just watch the story unfold, they can also have the opportunity to take the seat of the wedding and play a part of the musical.
And to help deliver that immersive quality, video designer Andrzej Goulding crafted a bold visual concept: influenced by Australian artists and aesthetics resulting in vibrant colours and strong graphic framing.
Mobile phone frames are used as set pieces, covering two LED sliders that move across the stage, injecting energy and movement into the visual narrative.
The visual content is creative and bold, and the challenge for the LED screen is big also.
The Visual Demands: Striking Color, Seamless Black
Dan shared some of the unique visual demands that made this show especially challenging:
“The content around the frame needs to fade to black, with the frame itself creating shadows, so that dark matte black effect is really important.”
Color accuracy at low brightness levels was essential, particularly where screen content blended into physical set pieces. The LED wall had to deliver deep blacks without compromising color fidelity—something that can be difficult to achieve.
Beyond visual performance, the panels also had to be lightweight, easy to move, and quick to set up—since the LED elements needed to glide across the stage in sync with the story.

The INFiLED Solution: DBmk2 Series Delivers On All Fronts
Dan and his team, in partnership with Stage Sound Services, chose INFiLED’s DBmk2 Series to meet the production’s high bar.
- Deep Blacks, Clean Whites
The DBmk2 Series’ 10,000:1 contrast ratio and matte black surface delivered the visual quality the production demanded.
“The blacks were deep, the whites were clean, and it just looked great on stage.”
The reduced mirror reflection of the LED surface helped keep visuals smooth and clear, while ensuring content blended naturally with the physical elements of the set.
- Reliable Color Accuracy at Low Brightness
Thanks to INFiLED’s proprietary CBSF technology, the DBmk2 Series offers uniform brightness and color reproduction from every angle—even when running at just 500 nits.
“The challenge is that the darker you make the wall, the worse the color reproduction can become. For this show, we’re running most of the product at about 500 nits. At this lower brightness, we still need the color reproduction to be just as accurate as when the screen is at full brightness.”
- Lightweight and Easy to Work With
With tight timelines and moving LED sliders in the set design, ease of use was a top priority.
“We used 500x500mm panels from the DBmk2 Series, allowing us to create irregular shaped walls to accommodate the scenic framing requirements.” Dan adds.
The system’s modular design and quick-lock system also helped the team to install and adjust panels quickly and confidently.

- Tailored to the Stage Design
In total, 412 DBmk2 500x500mm LED panels were deployed across different elements of the set:
-Backwall: 11 meters wide by 7 meters high, constructed with 308 DBmk2 500x500mm panels.
-Downstage Automated Phone Slider: 56 DBmk2 500x500mm panels.
-Upstage Automated Phone Slider: 48 DBmk2 500x500mm panels.
These screens were powered by a Disguise EX3+ media server and driven by Brompton SX40 processors with XD signal distribution, ensuring seamless performance throughout the show.
All equipment was supplied by our long-time partner Stage Sound Services, who played a critical role in the project’s success.
- A Perfect Pairing: INFiLED and Brompton
We know the processor can make or break the workflow. That’s why at INFiLED, we always tend to keep this in mind when we develop our products and work jointly with key market players such as Brompton, a trusted solution that is intuitive and user-friendly, and integrates smoothly with INFiLED products.
“The 10-bit processing, dark magic, and studio mode are essential for achieving the quality we need in theatre settings.”
And there’s another bonus: fewer cables.
“Using Brompton also helped reduce the amount of cable we needed to run to the wall, which keeps the automated moving pieces efficiently cabled.”
- Local Support Makes the Difference
Beyond hardware, Dan emphasized the importance of responsive support received from our local team in the UK, especially with fast-moving productions.
“One of the biggest advantages is having a UK-based team to work with. Time zones are also crucial. We often face problems late at night and need a solution by the morning. With INFiLED, we don’t have to wait days for an answer, which is a big relief.”

The Impact Onstage: “You Have to Come and See This”
Muriel’s Wedding The Musical opened on 10 April 2025 at Curve Leicester and run through 10 May. The response from audiences has been glowing:
“It’s touching and enjoyable and lovely.”
“The actors are superb, the set is amazing.”
“You have to see it.”

Conclusion: A Workflow That Works
For Dan and the crew, the success of Muriel’s Wedding is about more than just standout visuals. It’s about trust, collaboration, and smooth production workflows.
“The relationship between manufacturer and supplier is key. I trust that if Stage Sound Service is satisfied with INFiLED, then I know I’m in good hands.”
Working with long-time partners like Stage Sound Services, along with the reliability of the Brompton processor, created a streamlined, stress-free production environment.
“LED technology can feel a bit mysterious at first, especially when you’re working with new products. But with INFiLED and Brompton, things are becoming much more user-friendly.”
From visuals to workflow, INFiLED’s DBmk2 Series brought Muriel’s Wedding The Musical to life—making it the wedding of the year.
