Overview

Georgia State University (GSU) is a leading public research university in Atlanta, US. It’s currently No. 1 in the US for undergraduate teaching, and has been in the top five of most innovative public institutions for a decade.

In keeping with its innovative reputation, its leaders formed a multi-partner strategic collaboration to transform an existing traditional classroom setting, and to create a new, multi-use event space for academics and students alike.

At the heart of this project was our amazing client Atlanta Soundworks (ASW), AV designers extraordinaire for over thirty years. What makes them different is their commitment to delivering the experience their clients are looking for, not just one-dimensional lighting or sound.

 About Atlanta Soundworks

Best of Georgia 2024 winner for office tech firms, Atlanta Soundworks has been delighting clients for more than 30 years with its impressive immersive tech expertise and dedication to achieving their clients’ ambitions.  Cross-sectoral, hypercreative and reliable, the team is known throughout the southeast US for transforming spaces & places with precision and purpose.

INFiLED was proud to work within the partnership to integrate two LED product lines into what became a more engaging, interactive and flexible environment, built to support GSU’s bold teaching and research ambitions.

The Vision: Smart LED Technology for Smart People

GSU’s vision was to position itself as a leading HE institution for advanced online simulcasting. Christopher Anderson, AV Manager at GSU, said, ”The Dean wanted to transform the institution into the go-to place for both professional events and advanced education.”

The task was twofold. First, to transform the existing classroom into a streamlined, seamless and flexible learning space for both in-person and virtual lessons. Second, to create a new and flexible event space to fit professional needs and event opportunities.  And all, of course, without disrupting GSU daily learning and teaching too much.

To bring the vision to life, Anderson collaborated with Atlanta Soundworks (ASW) and INFiLED, as well as key technology partners Sennheiser, Barco, Q-SYS, Newline, TSI Touch, and Zoom.

The Challenge: From Basic AV to Flexible Learning

Previously, GSU’s classrooms relied on basic AV setups that included a loose array of popup screens, projectors, white boards and audio carts. Teaching and learning with this setup had been challenging because of:

  • Poor visibility and color accuracy: Projectors struggled with brightness and clarity.
  • Limited interactivity: The traditional displays couldn’t support touch or real-time teaching tools.
  • High maintenance: Bulky, aging systems wasted tech support time with frequent calibration and flaky reliability.
  • Lack of hybrid readiness: The spaces weren’t optimized for simulcast lectures, remote collaboration, or had the flexibility for any kind of event opportunity.

The Solution: INFiLED WT & WP Series

The partnership understood the assignment.

For the classroom, INFiLED’s WT 0.9mm was chosen because it’s engineered with ultra HD tech for pixel-perfect near-screen viewing. The team built a 16ft direct-view LED interactive video wall which included:

  • Ultra-fine 0.9mm pixel pitch for exceptional sharpness without visible pixelation at close viewing distances, as well as gesture-based interaction without the usual side order of image distortion.
  • Chip-on-Board (COB) and SolidSkin tech for superior durability and reliability, much needed in spaces buzzing with energetic (and sometimes clutzy)
  • A high refresh rate (3840Hz) for flicker-free and stable images, as well as 16-bit grayscale, for smooth motion and color depth in any brightness.
  • A standard 16:9 ratio, perfect for modern video conferencing and seamless integration with multimedia content.

And, as the frosting on top of the cake, the transformed classroom was optimized as an official Zoom Room, making instant collaboration accessible to any student or academic, anywhere.

In the flex space, the team chose INFiLED’s lightweight and flexible WP1.2mm, starring INFiLED’s proprietary ColdLED tech, which twins superb clarity with budget-friendly low power consumption.

INFiLED’s LED technology was just part of the fun. The transformation was supported with four 98” Newline monitors, Q-SYS AI tracking cameras, JBL subwoofers, Barco ClickShare for seamless content sharing, and Sennheiser TeamConnect Ceiling 2 microphones for the clearest of clear audio.

The Result: A Future-Ready Classroom

The transformation was immediate and impressive. The two upgraded spaces now offer a better experience for students, and more teaching flexibility for academics. Tech experts from an array of different companies worked brilliantly together to produce something valuable for the quality and flexibility of education in Georgia.

GSU’s Christopher Anderson summarizes:  “Together, we turned his bold vision into a tangible reality. The result is two incredible rooms that stand as a testament to what’s possible when a clear vision is supported by the right team and technology. I am immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

So are we, Christopher, so are we.
